Alberto Lucio Killed in Oceanside Pedestrian Accident on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton

Oceanside, California (December 7, 2021) – The U.S. Marine who was killed in a traffic collision that happened early Monday morning in Oceanside has been identified as Lance Cpl. Alberto Lucio, 20, of Smithville, Tennessee, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident, which was reported a little before 3:30 a.m. December 6, happened on southbound Interstate 5 near Las Pulgas Road.
CHP said Lucio had stopped to assist a driver of an SUV that had slammed into the center divider and rolled over.

Lucio was struck by a passing box truck. He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident, which was near the base he was stationed.
The driver of the crashed SUV, Darryl Sheffey, 36, and his passenger, a 31-year-old woman, were both transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for treatment of major injuries.
Authorities said Sheffey is expected to be arrested on multiple charges after being released from the hospital.
The incident is under investigation.
