Ranchita, CA: Fatal 2-Car Crash on San Felipe Road

Ranchita, California (December 30, 2021) – A head-on collision has claimed the life of a 79-year-old Borrego Springs man Wednesday afternoon in Ranchita and left another person injured, according to authorities.

The deadly accident occurred at about 2:51 p.m., on December 29, at mile marker 1100 on San Felipe Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the Borrego Springs man was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup southbound on San Felipe Road when he swerved into the northbound lane to pass several vehicles ahead of him.

For unknown reasons, the Chevrolet collided head-on with a Toyota 4Runner that was traveling northbound. One of the vehicles then collided with a southbound 2014 Ford Focus, which was one of the vehicles the Chevrolet was attempting to pass.

Due to the impact of the collision, the Focus veered off the roadway and slammed into a tree.

1 Killed in Crash on San Felipe Road

The driver of the Silverado was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the 4Runner, a 49-year-old resident, was transported to Palomar Medical Center in with life-threatening injuries.

The Focus's driver, a 38-year-old Australian man, did not suffer any injuries.

Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the crash.

The collision remains under investigation.
