At Least 1 Dies in Weldon Crash on Highway 178 near Kelso Creek Road

Weldon, California (January 29, 2022) – Tipney Parnell Worthy Jr., 27, was arrested in a DUI crash that left a woman dead on Saturday morning east of Weldon, the California Highway Patrol said.

The 11:40 a.m. collision happened on Highway 178, just west of Kelso Creek Road.

According to the CHP, Tipney was driving a Nissan Versa westbound on Highway 178 when he allowed the vehicle to cross over double yellow lines and into the opposite lane.

The Versa reportedly collided head-on with a Chevrolet Cheyenne that was traveling eastbound.

A woman in the front passenger seat of the Cheyenne died in the collision. Her name has not been released pending notification of family.

Worthy and the Cheyenne driver were both transported to Kern Medical with minor to moderate injuries.

Police later determined that Worthy was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. He was ultimately arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.

He is schedule to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.
