County, California (February 10, 2022) – A woman who was killed in a multi-vehicle collision in Madera County on Wednesday evening has been identified as a 49-year-old woman.

Patricia Vargas died at the site of the collision that happened at about 6 p.m. February 9, on Road 27 at Avenue 17.

According to investigators, a Chrysler traveling northbound on Road 27 made a sudden turn onto westbound Avenue 17.

At the same time, Vargas was driving a Nissan Rogue on Avenue 17 and swerved to avoid the Chrysler.

The Nissan ended up striking the rear of the Chrysler and collided head-on with a pulling a trailer.

Vargas was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene following the accident.

A passenger in her vehicle was flown to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries. 

Another passenger, an 11-year-old girl, was not wearing a seatbelt and reportedly sustained major injuries. She was taken to Valley Children's Hospital. 

Authorities arrested the driver of the Chrysler, identified as Miguel Hernandez, 33, on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The investigation is ongoing.
