James Whitley Killed in Semi-Truck Vs. Car Crash on Nees Avenue in Firebaugh

Firebaugh, California (April 8, 2022) – 35-year-old James Whitley, of , has been identified as the driver who died after colliding with a big rig on Friday afternoon near Firebaugh, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision occurred at around 5:38 p.m. on W Nees Avenue, near N Russell Avenue.

CHP said a semi- was traveling west on Nees, and a white sedan was heading east on Nees when, for unknown reasons, the sedan crossed into the westbound lane.

According to the report, the semi-driver attempted to avoid a collision by turning to the right, but the left side of the sedan still collided with part of the big rig. The semi-truck overturned, coming to rest on the right side of the north shoulder, and the car veered into the south shoulder.

Investigators said Whitley was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash but was ejected from the sedan.

First responders pronounced him dead at the crash site.

The driver of the semi was not hurt.

Authorities investigating the collision said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
