Douglas Payne Arrested after Fatal Carlsbad Accident on Interstate 5 near Cannon Road
Carlsbad, California (April 29, 2022) – Douglas Payne, 51, of Carlsbad, was arrested following a suspected DUI crash that left one person dead late Wednesday evening in Carlsbad, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident happened at about 11:17 p.m. April 27, on Interstate 5, north of Cannon Road.
According to the report, Payne was driving a red Honda Accord southbound on I-5 when he drifted into the right shoulder, for unknown reasons, and rear-ended a disabled gray Ford Explorer.
The impact pushed the Ford into a 65-year-old Sun City man who was tending to the disabled vehicle.

The Sun City man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Payne was arrested after the accident on charges of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
The crash impacted traffic in the area for hours as crews worked at the scene.
