Nevada County, California (June 8, 2022) – Jessica Johnson, 36, of Sacramento, has been identified as the driver who was killed in a Saturday evening collision in Nevada County,  according to the California Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened at around 6:30 p.m. on June 4, on , just east of Chalk Bluff Road.

CHP said Travis Reynaga, 34, of , was driving a 2002 Acura TL west on State Route 20 at a high rate of speed when he drifted into the eastbound side on a curve and collided head-on with a 2022 Ford F-350.

Johnson was a passenger in the Acura and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reynaga was taken to UC with critical injuries.

A passenger in the Ford, Matt Perkins, 43, of Live Oak, was treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford suffered major injuries while another occupant of the vehicle had moderate injuries. The patients were taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

The CHP is investigating the crash.

Nevada County, California (June 5, 2022) – A crash involving a livestock trailer left a woman dead in Nevada County on Saturday evening, according to California Highway Patrol.

The incident happened at around 6:30 p.m. on June 4, on State Route 20 east of Chalk Bluff Road.

According to the CHP, a man was driving an Acura eastbound on State Route 20 at a high rate of speed when she crossed into the westbound side on a curve and collided head-on with a westbound Ford F350.

A passenger in the Acura was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was only identified as a 37-year-old woman.

The driver of the Acura was transported to UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries.

The 77-year-old man driving the Ford was transported to  hospital with major injuries. One of the passengers in the Ford was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

A third person in the Ford sustained minor injuries but was not transported.

The sheep in the livestock trailer were not injured in the accident.

The CHP is working to determine the cause of the collision.

Traffic Collision Fatalities Reached a 16-Year High in 2021, Early Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities reached a 16-year high last year.
According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021. This shows a 10.5% increases from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020.
NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

The NHTSA report indicates that the traffic fatalities in the following categories showed relatively large increases in 2021, as compared to 2020:
Fatalities in multi-vehicle collisions went up 16%
Fatalities among drivers 65 and older up 14%
fatalities up 13%
Fatalities in crashes involving at least one large up 13%
Daytime fatalities up 11%
Fatalities on urban roads up 16%
Motorcyclist deaths up 9%
Bicyclist deaths up 5%
Fatalities in speeding-related mishaps up 5%
Fatalities in police-reported, alcohol-involvement collisions up 5%
