Colin Rumbold Killed in Deadly San Francisco Crash on Highway 101 at I-80 Connector

, California (June 8, 2022) – Colin Rumbold, 34, of County, has been identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office as the motorcycle rider who was killed in an early Tuesday morning crash in San Francisco.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck happened on the Highway 101 connector to at around 3:30 a.m. on June 7.

CHP said Rumbold was riding a motorcycle on I-80 when he crashed while trying to avoid a Nissan sedan that was stopped in the area. 

The impact ejected Rumbold and he fell nearly 40 feet down the freeway.

Rumbold fell on a Honda sedan heading west on I-80 towards the connector ramp to US-101 southbound.

The Honda was then rear-ended by a Subaru Forester.

The motorcyclist died at the scene.

The drivers of the Nissan and the Subaru were both arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The diver of the Honda was not injured.

The CHP is condicing an investigation into the incident.

Traffic Collision Fatalities Reached a 16-Year High in 2021, Early Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities reached a 16-year high last year.
According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021. This shows a 10.5% increases from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020.
NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
