1 Killed, 9 Injured in Byron Crash at Byron Highway and Camino Diablo

Contra Costa, California (June 16, 2022) – Authorities are investigating a traffic collision that claimed the life of at least one person and left nine other people injured in Byron on Wednesday evening.
At around 5:40 p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the accident on Byron Highway near Camino Diablo.
The preliminary investigation indicated an Acura sedan was traveling southbound on Byron when the driver allowed the vehicle to drift across the centerline and collided head-on with an oncoming Chevrolet Suburban carrying nine people.
Fatal Crash Closes Byron Highway in Eastern Contra Costa County
The impact of the crash sent both vehicles off the roadway where they struck telephone poles.
One car caught fire after the crash. The road was closed in both directions as fire crews put out a blaze on the side of the road.
CHP says one passenger in the Chevy succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The identity of the deceased person, however, was not immediately disclosed.
Eight people in the Suburban suffered moderate injuries and were transported to the hospital.
The Acura driver suffered minor injuries and was booked into the Martinez jail on suspicion of DUI.
More details about the wreck were not provided.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Traffic Collision Fatalities Reached a 16-Year High in 2021, Early Estimates Show
Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities reached a 16-year high last year.
According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020. NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
The report indicates that the traffic fatalities in the following categories showed relatively large increases in 2021, as compared to 2020;

- Fatalities among drivers 65 and older rose by 14%
- Pedestrian fatalities up 13%
- Fatalities in crashes involving at least one large truck up 13%
- Daytime fatalities up 11% Fatalities on urban roads up 16%
- Motorcyclist deaths up 9% Bicyclist deaths up 5%
- Fatalities in speeding-related mishaps up 5%
- Fatalities in police-reported, alcohol-involvement collisions up 5%
