, California (June 17, 2022) – Helen Byers, 78, has been identified as the woman who was killed in a collision that occurred in Modesto on Tuesday, according to the authorities.

The incident took place on Gates Road and Highway 132 on June 14.

Byers was southbound on Gates Road when she stopped at a stop sign at the intersection.

She then proceeded into the intersection and was struck by a vehicle traveling west on Highway 132.

The impact sent Byers' vehicle off the side of the road and into a canal. The vehicle became submerged in the canal shortly after.

Passersby stopped to help pull Byers out of the water.

Medics performed CPR on Byers before transporting her to a hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries.

The other motorist was treated for minor injuries.

The CHP is conducting an investigation into the collision.

Modesto, California (June 14, 2022) – One person died in a two-vehicle collision on Tuesday evening in Modesto.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Highway 132 near Road at around 7:56 p.m.

Two vehicles collided on the highway in unclear circumstances. The impact of the collision sent one of the vehicles off the roadway and into a canal.

The officers who responded to the incident found the vehicle fully submerged in water.

CHP said one person was killed in the accident.

The identity of the deceased person was not immediately established.

More details about the crash were not provided.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

Traffic Collision Fatalities Reached a 16-Year High in 2021, Early Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities reached a 16-year high last year.

According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020. NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

The report indicates that the traffic fatalities in the following categories showed relatively large increases in 2021, as compared to 2020;

      • Fatalities in multi-vehicle collisions went up 16%
      • Fatalities among drivers 65 and older rose by 14%
      • fatalities up 13%
      • Fatalities in crashes involving at least one large up 13%
      • Daytime fatalities up 11% Fatalities on urban roads up 16%
      • Motorcyclist deaths up 9% Bicyclist deaths up 5%
      • Fatalities in speeding-related mishaps up 5%
      • Fatalities in police-reported, alcohol-involvement collisions up 5%
