Ieli Paulo Ieli and Andres Hernandez Diaz Killed in Merced Crash on Highway 59

Merced County, California (June 25, 2022) – Authorities have identified two people killed in Merced County crash on Tuesday morning as 33-year-old Ieli Paulo Ieli and 22-year-old Andres Hernandez Diaz.
According to a California Highway Patrol dispatch, the accident happened shortly before 4:30 a.m. June 20, on Highway 59 at Furtado Road.
Per the report, Diaz was a 2011 Ford Fusion passenger while Ieli was driving a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe when the accident happened. The two cars and a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic were reportedly heading south on Highway 59.
It was reported that the 2022 Volvo semi-truck heading north, for reasons yet to be determined, veered into the approaching cars and crashed head-on into the three vehicles.
Firefighters and medics rushed to the scene and declared both Diaz and Ieli dead at the accident area.
The Fusion driver, 20 years, was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.
The Chevrolet driver a 54-year-old Los Banos male resident, and the male truck driver, a 28-year-old Kingsburg resident, were not injured in the collision.
No additional information regarding this incident was provided.

Merced County, California (June 21, 2022) – Two people were killed after a multi-vehicle collision that happened early morning in Merced County, according to the California Highway Patrol report.
The collision occurred a while before 4:30 a.m. on Highway 59 at Furtado Road.
As per the police dispatch, a semi-truck swerved over the roadway and hit three vehicles heading south on the highway. It was not immediately known why the truck veered over.
Officials confirmed two people died as a result of the accident.
Authorities said that they did not suspect drugs or alcohol to have played a role in the accident.
Traffic delays were expected in the location as crews cleared the debris.
No further details concerning this crash were released.

Crash Fatalities in California Went Up in 2021, Early Federal Estimates Show
Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities caused by traffic crashes on U.S. freeways reached a 16-year high in 2021.
The crash deaths also increased in almost every state, including California, according to NHTSA.
According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021 in the U.S. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020.
NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
In California, 4,258 people died in traffic collisions in 2021 – a 10.7 increase from the 2020s 3,847, as per the NHTSA report titled – “Crash Stats: Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021.”
According to the traffic deaths estimates, in the two-state region that includes Arizona and California, crash fatalities in 2021 are projected to go up by 10% over the previous year.
