, California (June 26, 2022) – Maria Nieves, 72, of , was one of three women who died in a train collision in Brentwood Sunday afternoon, the coroner's office said.

The collision happened at about 1 p.m. near Orwood Road and Bixler Road.

Nieves and five other people were riding in a four-door sedan traveling north through a dirt driveway and  heading to a vineyard property where a fundraiser was being held.

Sadly, the sedan was hit at an unmarked crossing by a westbound Amtrak train.

The car was pushed approximately 60 feet into a parked SUV.

Authorities said Nieves and two other women in the sedan were killed in the crash.

A child and two men also riding in the sedan were hospitalized with major injuries.

Another person was being treated for moderate injuries following the incident.

No one on the train was injured. Authorities confirmed that the train was carrying 81 passengers and five crew members at the time.

Further details on the collision were not immediately released.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Brentwood, California (June 26, 2022) – Three people were killed when an Amtrak train collided with a vehicle in Brentwood on Sunday afternoon, according to the authorities.

A four-door sedan reportedly pulled into the train tracks near the area of Orwood Road and Bixler Road and was struck by the train at around 1 p.m.

The impact sent the car off the roadway and it collided with a second vehicle.

The train came to a stop nearly a quarter-mile from the point of the collision.

The crash left three women deceased. Authorities said the deceased women were all over the age of 50.

Meanwhile, a child and two other men involved in the crash were taken to John Muir Medical Center with serious injuries. One of the men had to be airlifted from the scene.

A fourth patient was treated for moderate injuries.

Authorities said all victims of the crash were in the car. 81 passengers and five crew members on the train were uninjured.

An investigation into the deadly crash is underway.

Crash Fatalities in California Went Up in 2021, Early Federal Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities caused by traffic crashes on U.S. freeways reached a 16-year high in 2021. The crash deaths also increased in almost every state, including California, according to NHTSA.

According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021 in the U.S. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020.

NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

In California, 4,258 people died in traffic collisions in 2021 – a 10.7 increase from 2020's 3,847, as per the NHTSA report titled – “Crash Stats: Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021.”

According to the traffic deaths estimates, in the two-state region that includes Arizona and California, crash fatalities in 2021 are projected to go up by 10% over the previous year.
