Hermilo Vasquez-Mendez Among 2 People Killed in Orcutt Car Crash on Highway 1 near Highway 135

Orcutt, California (July 5, 2022) – Hermilo Vasquez-Mendez, 41, of Santa Maria, has been identified as one of the two people who were killed in a traffic accident on Saturday night in Orcutt, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office Coroner's Bureau.
The deadly accident occurred at about 10:15 p.m., on July 2, on Highway 1 near Highway 135.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Honda Civic, driven by Vasquez-Mendez, was headed northbound on Highway 1 when it crashed into the back of a northbound Nissan Sentra.
As a result of the crash impact, the Civic flipped over before coming to rest on its wheels in the highway median.
Vasquez-Mendez then exited the vehicle and walked into the southbound traffic lanes. Unfortunately, Vasquez-Mendez was struck and killed by a GMC Yukon driven by a 49-year-old Lompoc man.
Gonzalez-Bautista, who was a left rear passenger in the Nissan, sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
The driver of the Nissan, a 19-year-old Nipomo woman, sustained minor injuries in the accident.
It was unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the mishap.
The crash remains under investigation.
