Rider Dies in Highway 1 Motorcycle Accident near Firefighter Road in Santa Barbara County
Santa Barbara County, California (July 28, 2022) – A motorcyclist died in a head-on collision that happened Thursday morning on Highway 1 near Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Multiple vehicles were involved in the collision that occurred at about 7:42 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Firefighter Road.
According to authorities, a GMC Yukon was heading northbound on Highway 1 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered into the left northbound lane and center median. The car crossed into the southbound lanes directly into the path of a motorcycle.
The motorcyclist could not avoid the GMC on time, resulting in a head-on crash.
Fatal Cabrillo Highway Motorcycle Accident
The force sent the motorcycle west into the No. 2 lane of southbound Highway 1, where it collided with a Lincoln Navigator. The impact ejected the rider from the bike and caused them to collide with the GMC again.
CHP said the second collision with the GMC sent the rider onto the west descending embankment, about 40 feet off the roadway.
Two other vehicles driving southbound on the highway at the time of the crash acquired crash damage. Authorities said the drivers of the vehicles noticed the GMC continuing into the southbound lane and steered their cars into the center divider to avoid a crash.
One of the cars, a Jeep Cherokee, was hit by debris from the initial crash, and the other, a Subaru Legacy, acquired damage from turning into the center divider.
CHP said the Santa Maria motorcyclist was killed in the accident. The 21-year-old Santa Maria woman driving the GMC was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
The drivers of the other vehicles were not hurt and remained at the scene.
Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident, and no arrests were made.
