Michael Mead Killed in Fiery Crash on Highway 299 in Redding

, California (August 23, 2022) – Michael Merlyn Mead, 69, of Hayfork, has been identified as the person who was killed in a big rig accident on Thursday morning in Redding, according to the Shasta County Coroner's Office.

The deadly accident occurred at about 11:55 a.m., on August 18, on , just east of John F. Kennedy Memorial Drive at the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a big rig was headed eastbound on the highway at about 50 to 60 mph when it collided head-on with a red SUV driven by Mead. 

Mead was reportedly traveling westbound on the highway when, for unknown reasons, it crossed over the double-yellow lines and into the big rig's path.

The fiery accident sparked a fire which burned about 35 acres before it was contained.

Sadly, Mead sustained injuries in the accident.

The driver of the semi- sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the collision.

The crash remains under investigation.
