Rider Severely Injured in Motorcycle Crash with Pickup Truck on Byron Highway in Contra Costa County
Contra Costa, California (September 7, 2022) – A motorcyclist was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition after colliding with a pickup truck Tuesday afternoon in Contra Costa County, as per a local news source.
The collision occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Byron Highway.
Authorities said a pickup truck was heading northbound on Byron when it appeared to slow down to make a left-hand turn into a residential driveway.
At the same time, a motorcyclist in his 20s was traveling in the same direction at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended the pickup, got thrown from the bike, and landed on the pickup's bed.
Rider Hospitalized after Byron Highway Accident in Contra Costa
The rider sustained broken bones and internal injuries.
Emergency personnel from the Contra Costa Fire District responded to the scene and requested an air ambulance to airlift the motorcyclist to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
The helicopter landed at Byron Highway and Brentwood Boulevard and airlifted the rider to the hospital in critical condition.
The firefighters said they could not land the helicopter near the crash scene as they usually do because that section of Byron Highway where the accident occurred has only two lanes and power lines run down both sides of the road. The fields in the area are also in the harvest time or being plowed, and dust would be too much if the air ambulance were to land there.
The driver of the pickup complained of pain to the back after the crash.
Authorities are investigating the accident.
