Woman Killed in Crash Involving Phoenix PD Vehicle Identified

, Ariz. – Authorities identified the driver who died Thursday morning in a collision involving a Phoenix Police Department car as 19-year-old Ashley Vailes.

The wreck was reported just before 9 a.m. near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

Phoenix police said one of their officers was transporting a prisoner to the Cactus Park Precinct at the time of the accident.

The officer was heading westbound on Thunderbird and tried to turn left onto 35th when they collided with a vehicle driven eastbound on Thunderbird by Vailes.

After the impact, Vailes' car hit a light pole and a power box, then caught fire.

Responding firefighters extinguished the fire and pronounced Vailes dead at the scene.

The officer and the prisoner were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police said witness statements and surveillance footage indicated that Vailes ran a red light prior to the collision.

The patrol vehicle sustained front-end damage.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Phoenix, Ariz. – A female driver died after her car collided with a Phoenix Police Department vehicle Thursday morning, according to the police department.

Authorities said just before 9 a.m., a civilian car and a police vehicle collided near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

An officer was transporting a prisoner to the Cactus Park Precinct when they collided with another car as the officer attempted to turn left from Thunderbird to 35th.

Authorities said the second vehicle hit a light pole and a power box after the first impact, then caught fire.

The driver of that car, only identified as a woman, died in the collision.

The officer and the prisoner were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The deceased person allegedly failed to stop at a red light prior to the accident.

Authorities are investigating the crash.
