Chiquita Canyon Landfill Accident
Worker Hospitalized After High-Pressure Hose Malfunctions in Chiquita Canyon Landfill

Castaic, Calif. – A worker was hospitalized Friday evening when a high-pressure pump malfunctioned at the Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Castaic.

According to the Fire Department, the incident was first reported as an explosion around 7 p.m. in the 29200 block of Henry Mayo Drive.

When firefighters arrived and did further investigation, they found out that there was a mechanical malfunction of a “small” high-pressure hose. The mishap caused about 100 gallons of hydrogen peroxide to spill.

The firefighters said an employee was taken to the hospital in unknown condition before they arrived at the scene.

Reportedly, the incident occurred just a day after the Environmental Protection Agency announced it had found the landfill poses imminent and substantial danger to nearby communities. The agency asked the operators to mitigate off-site community impacts of noxious odors and hazardous waste and to contain and reduce the smoldering or reaction events at the site.
