Talk to a Pedestrian Accident Lawyer
The safety of pedestrians is a top priority in our nation. There are a variety of laws and regulations in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and drivers on the roads. Here are some of the laws that affect pedestrian travel:
- “Right of way”: Pedestrians have the right to cross the road in designated crosswalks. Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians who are legally crossing.
- “Jaywalking”: Pedestrians are required to cross the road when it is safe to do so and may be fined for doing so if they are jaywalking outside of a designated crosswalk or if they are crossing in an area where it is prohibited for pedestrians to cross.
- Traffic signal laws: Pedestrians must follow traffic signals and only cross the road when the signal permits safe passage.
- Sidewalks laws: Pedestrians must use sidewalks when they are safe to do so. Pedestrians may be fined for walking in a street or on a highway.
- DUI laws: If a pedestrian is crossing a street or highway while impaired by drugs or alcohol, they may be held liable for any accident or injuries they cause.
Both drivers and pedestrians need to understand these laws and take steps to protect themselves and others on the roads.
