1 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision on Loop 202 in Tempe

, AZ – One person died, and several others were hurt in a traffic collision that happened early Monday morning in Tempe.

The accident took place around 2 a.m. on the eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) between Center Parkway and Priest Road.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a Dodge Avenger was traveling eastbound on the freeway when the sedan hit the concrete center median wall. The vehicle was then hit by a Ford Escape SUV. The driver of the Dodge ended up in traffic lanes, where they were run over by several other vehicles.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the SUV sustained unspecified injuries.

Loop 202 was shut down in both directions near Priest Road during the investigation.
