The wreck occurred around 9:52 p.m. on the westbound Interstate 80 at the northbound Highway 101 split.
Two sedans collided in the No. 1 lane for an unknown reason.
San Franciso police officers were in the area for an unrelated call when the accident happened.
San Francisco firefighters responded to the scene and transported two people to California Pacific Medical Center with minor injuries, including the complaint of pain to the back.
CHP officers are investigating the collision.
