Los Angeles, CA. – A firefighter was seriously injured in an explosion that happened Monday at a homeless encampment in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in the west San Fernando Valley.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the accident was reported around 1:30 p.m. in the 15700 block of West Burbank Boulevard.
LAFD said at least 11 firefighters were responding to a half-acre brush fire when, as they entered the area of the encampment and brush fire, an explosion occurred.
One firefighter sustained significant head trauma. The victim was airlifted to Northridge Hospital in critical condition. Ten other firefighters were medically evaluated.
The report did not give details about what exploded.
A water-dropping helicopter responded to the fire.
