According to a preliminary investigation, a driver going westbound on State Route 86 allegedly failed to stop at a red light and struck the side of an SUV. The SUV was pushed into the median where it caught fire.
Pima County, AZ. – Five people killed in a fiery crash on Ajo Way in Pima County Monday evening has been identified.
The Department of Public Safety said the crash occurred around 5 p.m. on Ajo way and San Joaquin Road.
According to a preliminary investigation, a driver going westbound on State Route 86 allegedly failed to stop at a red light and struck the side of an SUV. The SUV was pushed into the median where it caught fire.
All five people in the SUV named, Maria Melendez, 95, Antonio Melendez, 73, Susana Mosqueda, 65, and Maria Elena Ledesma, 71, and Maria's husband, Jose Ferlan Ledesma, 73, were killed in the mishap.
The driver of the other car was taken to the hospital.
The police believed she was impaired at the time of the crash.
No additional details regarding the mishap were provided.
An investigation is ongoing.
