One person killed in crash at South Highway 243 and Road 23 Southwest in Mattawa

Mattawa, WA – 36-year-old Tranquilino Sandoval-Guerrero of Mattawa was killed and 24-year-old Isidro Ibarra-Birrueta of Mattawa hospitalized after a traffic collision on Highway 243 in Mattawa Tuesday evening.
According to the Washington State Police, the crash happened at around 5 p.m. December 10 on Highway 243 at Road 23.
The police said a pickup truck driven by 32-year-old Dexter A. Christensen of Quincy rear-ended two sedans which had stopped on the highway while one was waiting to make a left turn at Road 23 Southwest.
Both occupants of the turning sedan were uninjured, while the driver of the second sedan, Birrueta, was injured and airlifted to Confluence Health Hospital in Wenatchee for treatment.
Birrueta's passenger, later identified as Tranquilino Guerrero, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Troopers said Christensen caused the accident due to inattention by using his cellphone while behind the wheel and has been charged with vehicular homicide.
An investigation is underway.
