Newark, CA. – Authorities identified the cyclist who died after colliding with a car Sunday afternoon in Newark as 43-year-old Davinder Kumar.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on eastbound Highway 84, west of Interstate 880.
Investigators said Kumar, a homeless Newark transient, was riding a bicycle westbound in the center median against eastbound traffic.
At that time, eastbound traffic came to an abrupt stop for an unknown reason. A driver of a Mercedes sedan heading eastbound veered into the divider to avoid hitting another car, but collided head-on with Kumar.
The cyclist was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The driver of the sedan stopped and cooperated with investigators.

Newark, CA. – A 43-year-old man died when he collided head-on with a vehicle while riding a bicycle Sunday afternoon on a highway in Newark.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on eastbound Highway 84, just west of Interstate 880.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the man was riding a bicycle west in the center median against traffic when traffic abruptly stopped for an unknown reason.
As a result of the sudden traffic stop, a driver veered toward the center median to avoid hitting another vehicle but ended up colliding head-on with the cyclist.
Emergency personnel responded and transported the victim to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The man's name was not immediately released pending family notification. He was a homeless person who frequented the area.
The driver stopped and cooperated with investigators.
