Brentwood, CA. – One person died in a fiery car collision that happened Wednesday night in Brentwood, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The wreck occurred around 10:18 p.m. on westbound State Route 4 near Balfour Road.
A gray SUV and a gray sedan were involved in the collision. One of the cars reportedly crossed over the double yellow lines into opposing traffic and caused a head-on crash.
The SUV, an electric car, caught fire after the collision with an occupant trapped inside. The vehicle was emitting toxic fumes.
The Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, the Brentwood Police Department, firefighters, and paramedics responded to the scene.
The person trapped inside the SUV died in the crash. Firefighters took some time before they could extricate the body due to the toxic chemicals coming from the car.
It was unclear if any other person was injured.
Authorities are investigating the collision.
