Heavy extrication was required for some victims who were trapped in the wreckage, CHP officials reported

Santa Maria, Calif. – At least two people died late Saturday night following a wrong-way traffic collision on Highway 101 in Santa Maria, according to a CHP report.
According to the CHP, the crash happened at about 11:30 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 near the North Broadway interchange.
California Highway Patrol officers and Santa Maria firefighters responded to the scene and found two vehicles smoking following the crash. Heavy extrication was required for some victims who were trapped in the wreckage, CHP officials reported.
At least two people died in the crash. The names of the victims were withheld pending notification to the next of kin.
According to the CHP, the incident blocked all three lanes under the North Broadway overpass and officers diverted northbound traffic off the highway at Donovan Road.
No additional details regarding the crash were provided.
The incident remains under investigation.
