According to the Santa Rosa Police Department, the wreck was reported just after 6 p.m. on Fountaingrove Parkway between Stagecoach Road and Thomas Lake Harris Drive.
A preliminary investigation revealed that an elderly driver of a white Chevy sedan was traveling westbound on Fountaingrove behind a red Ford.
Witnesses told authorities that the Chevy's driver suddenly accelerated at a very high rate of speed and hit the back of the Ford, sending both vehicles into spins and causing collisions with trees.
First responders found the drivers in their vehicles with significant injuries. Both patients were taken to hospitals for treatment. They are both expected to recover.
