Del Mar, Calif. – The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office has released the name of the 39-year-old Westminster man who died in a big rig crash on 5 Freeway in Del Mar early Thursday morning.
The Medical Examiner identified the victim as Eric John Cavaness, 39, of Westminster.
The collision happened at around 4:16 a.m. January 25 on the southbound 5 Freeway near Del Mar Heights Road.
Authorities say Cavaness was driving a Toyota pickup truck southbound on 5 Freeway when, for reasons still under investigation, he rear-ended a Kenworth tractor-trailer also traveling southbound.
The truck became wedged under the trailer following the incident. Cavaness was pronounced dead at the scene after being extricated.

Del Mar, Calif. – Authorities are investigating a deadly car crash involving a big rig on Interstate 5 in Del Mar early Thursday morning.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the deadly auto-car crash at around 4:16 a.m. on the southbound 5 Freeway near Del Mar Heights Road.
Reportedly, a Toyota pickup truck rear-ended a semi-truck in unclear circumstances.
The Toyota was wedged under the semi-truck trapping the driver.
The driver was extricated and was pronounced dead at the crash site.
The driver was not immediately identified.
The wreck impacted the roadway for several hours.
An investigation is ongoing.
