Driver Killed in Long Beach Accident on Artesia (91) Freeway near Susana Road

, California (June 5, 2022) – A big rig accident occurred early Sunday morning in Long Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 2004 Toyota and a 2022 Freightliner were involved in the accident on the (91) Freeway, west of Susana Road at around 1 a.m.

According to CHP, Bryan Tostado, 25, of , was driving the Toyota at a high rate of speed eastbound on the freeway when he collided with the center divider and rear-ended the big rig.

The big rig lost control and crashed off the side of the road.

The driver of the rig, a resident, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The second driver was taken to Dignity Health-St. Mary Medical for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver was later arrested for unspecified reasons.

The CHP is investigating the collision.

Traffic Collision Fatalities Reached a 16-Year High in 2021, Early Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities reached a 16-year high last year.
According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021. This shows a 10.5% increases from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020.
NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
