, California (June 21, 2022) – Ashton McKiearnan, 41, has been identified as the man killed in a collision with a suspected DUI motorist in Clovis on Sunday morning, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened in the area of Ashlan and Sunnyside avenues on Sunday, June 19.

Authorities said Narayan Zerr, 35, of Clovis, was driving a west on Ashlan Avenue when he drifted to the left and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle driven by McKiearnan.

McKiearnan was killed in the crash. His wife and two children were in his car at the time and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The impact of the crash caused the truck to roll and it came to a rest on its roof.

Zerr was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving following the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

, California (June 19, 2022) – A man was killed in a suspected DUI head-on collision that left two other people injured in Clovis on Sunday evening.

The deadly crash was reported at around 7 p.m. on Ashlan Avenue near Sunnyside Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A black truck reportedly drifted into the eastbound side and slammed head-on into the man's Nissan sedan.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's wife and one of their two children were injured in the crash and were transported to the hospital for treatment.

The truck driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

More details about the crash were not provided.

CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.

Traffic Collision Fatalities Reached a 16-Year High in 2021, Early Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities reached a 16-year high last year.

According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020. NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

The report indicates that the traffic fatalities in the following categories showed relatively large increases in 2021, as compared to 2020;

      • Fatalities in multi-vehicle collisions went up 16%
      • Fatalities among drivers 65 and older rose by 14%
      • fatalities up 13%
      • Fatalities in crashes involving at least one large truck up 13%
      • Daytime fatalities up 11% Fatalities on urban roads up 16%
      • Motorcyclist deaths up 9% Bicyclist deaths up 5%
      • Fatalities in speeding-related mishaps up 5%
      • Fatalities in police-reported, alcohol-involvement collisions up 5%
