Man Hailed for Rescuing Baby in 2019 Dies after DUI Crash near Cedar and Florence Avenues in Fresno

Fresno, California (December 1, 2021) – Authorities said Aurelio Fuentes Jr. died Monday from critical injuries he sustained in a car crash on Tuesday, November 23, in southeast Fresno.
The collision also led to the arrest of Israel Douglas, who is believed to have been driving while intoxicated when he collided with Fuentes' car.
Fuentes was hailed as a hero in 2019 after he rescued a baby in Madera County. He died while receiving treatment for major injuries at Community Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
Fuentes was an Amazon-contracted employee and had just finished his work shift before the accident.
Authorities said the deceased was driving a black Chevrolet northbound on South Cedar Avenue when Douglas, who was driving a black Kia, crashed into his vehicle near East Florence.
Douglas was arrested and subsequently charged with gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. He pleaded not guilty on Tuesday and is scheduled to return to court next week.
Fuentes' family created a GoFundMe page to help raise funds following the tragic accident.
Fatal Auto Accidents in California
Auto accidents happen every day in roadways in California, some of them resulting in significant injuries that ultimately cause death.
It is unfortunate that many fatal car accidents in California result from the negligence of one or more drivers.
The aftermath of a fatal collision is always unbearable for the deceased's family members.
Although there is no amount of compensation that can replace a loved one, the immediate family members of the deceased can file a wrongful death claim to help settle outstanding medical bills. In addition, there is a need to seek compensation for loss of consortium, loss of a loved one's future income, emotional suffering, among other damages.
Wrongful Death Claim
A wrongful death claim can be negotiated with an insurance company or through a court of law. For a family member to establish a wrongful death claim, there must be evidence that the negligent party directly caused the injuries and death of their loved one.
At this point, it is advisable to involve a qualified wrongful death lawyer to help bring expertise to your claim.
