May is National Bicycle Safety Awareness Month

May is National Safety Month, and Pacific Attorney Group would like to remind every driver to slow down for passing riders. We also remind bicyclists to be visible, predictable, and safe on the road.

Here are some tips for drivers and bicyclists

Bicyclists

  • Always wear a properly secured helmet. (Though not a requirement for over 18-year-old bikers, helmets are important as they, in the event of a collision, reduce the chances of sustaining a head injury.
  • Travel in the same direction of traffic
  • Use lights at night
  • Always yield to pedestrians just like vehicles would.

Drivers

  • Slow down and be careful while driving through intersections. Observe lane discipline and speed limits.
  • Look twice for bicyclists before making a turn or opening car doors near streets or bike lanes
  • When passing a bicyclist, always maintain a minimum of three feet of space, and also be patient when driving behind a bicyclist.
  • Do not drive when impaired. Do not use your phone while driving.
