, California (May 21, 2022) – A horse rider was injured after colliding with a car Friday night near Brentwood, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The accident happened at about 9:30 p.m. on eastbound Delta Road, just west of Byron Highway.

A silver Toyota Corolla struck the horse rider under unclear circumstances.

The rider went down, partly blocking a traffic lane.

Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the accident.

Horse Rider Injured in Brentwood Crash

REACH Medivac Medic 81 responded to the scene and airlifted the patient, possibly to John Muir Medical Center, with a head injury and the complaint of pain. The victim was identified by CHP as 25-year-old Jose Vega.

It was not clear if the horse was injured. The animal was transported to Brentwood.

The driver of the Toyota was arrested for an unknown violation. The Animal Control Unit was requested to respond and take a dog belonging to the car's driver. The Toyota was towed away from the collision scene.

CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
