Cocopah Tribe Councilman Killed in Suspected DUI Crash in Yuma

Yuma, AZ. – Cocopah Tribe Councilman Irwin Twist was killed by a suspected impaired driver at a Yuma intersection Friday night.

According to Yuma County Sheriff's Office, the deadly crash happened at around 9:10 p.m. on Friday, June 21, at the intersection of Avenue C and County 14th Street.

A suspected drunk driver was driving a 2004 Toyota Tacoma south on Avenue C when he ran a posted blinking stop sign at the intersection and crashed into a 2015 Ford F-150 traveling westbound.

The driver and two passengers of the Ford F-150 were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) by Rural Metro, where one of the passengers, Irwin Twist, 75, of Somerton, succumbed to his injuries.

The driver and a passenger of the Toyota Tacoma were seriously injured and were also taken to YRMC. The driver was later airlifted to a area hospital for further medical treatment.

Authorities say the driver of the Tacoma may have been impaired at the time of the crash and will be charged once he is released from the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
