, California (July 10, 2022) – The San Diego County Medical Examiner identified the man who died in a multi-vehicle crash on Mission Gorge Road as Errol Hunt.

The 82-year-old San Diego man died at a hospital where he was rushed for treatment after the Friday afternoon accident.

The pileup happened at about 4:05 p.m. July 8, in the 7500 block of Mission Gorge Road near San Carlos, involving three vehicles.

According to authorities, Hunt was the sole occupant of a Toyota SUV going westbound on Mission Gorge when he turned left into a driveway in front of a Tesla and a BMW heading eastbound on Mission Gorge at a high rate of speed.

Hunt's car struck the front of the Tesla, and the BMW hit Hunt's car on the passenger side. Hunt's Toyota and the BMW rolled over.

Arriving paramedics extricated Hunt from his vehicle and administered CPR as they transported the man to Sharp Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. Unfortunately, Hunt was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:50 p.m.

The BMW driver suffered minor injuries. The Tesla driver was not injured.

San Diego, California (July 8, 2022) – A man was killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Friday afternoon in San Carlos, San Diego County, according to a local news report.

The deadly collision occurred a while after 4:00 p.m. in the 7500 block of Mission Gorge Road.

Per the report, a Telsa and a BMW were heading eastbound when a westbound Toyota SUV turned left into a driveway. The BMW then struck the SUV. The impact of the crash caused the SUV to overturn.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and transported the SUV driver to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The man was only identified as an 84-year-old man.

The BMW driver, 34 years, sustained minor wounds from the collision.

Officials said Mission Gorge Road was expected to be closed for several hours between Princess View, and Mission drives following the accident.

An investigation is underway.

Crash Fatalities in California Went Up in 2021, Early Federal Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities caused by traffic crashes on U.S. freeways reached a 16-year high in 2021. The crash deaths also increased in almost every state, including California, according to NHTSA.

According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021 in the US. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020.

NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

In California, 4,258 people died in traffic collisions in 2021 – a 10.7% increase from 2020's 3,847, as per the NHTSA report titled – “Crash Stats: Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021.”

According to the traffic deaths estimates, in the two-state region that includes Arizona and California, crash fatalities in 2021 are projected to go up by 10% over the previous year.
