, California (June 22, 2022) – Authorities have identified the 22-year-old man killed after a DUI collision on Sunday in San Francisco as Ismael Vidal Ramirez.

The collision happened at 2:55 a.m. on June 19, on at the Bay Bridge near Treasure Island.

As per the CHP officials, a 2007 Infiniti M45 was traveling on I-80 when it developed a mechanical problem and halted. A 2014 Nissan Frontier pickup crashed into the Infiniti a few seconds after it had stopped. The Infiniti sustained significant damage following the collision.

The Contra Costa County resident Ramirez was found unconscious by the responding medical personnel. He was declared dead at the scene.

Ramirez was reportedly the Infiniti's rear passenger.

Officials arrested the Infiniti's driver, a 22-year-old woman from San Francisco, on suspicion of DUI.

An investigation is ongoing.

Fatal Bay Bridge Crash in San Francisco Shuts Down Traffic

Officials say the Antioch man was in the rear seat of the Infiniti and was killed in the crash.

The identity of the deceased person was not immediately disclosed.

Another 21-year-old man in the rear seat and a 22-year-old woman in the front passenger seat suffered major injuries in the crash and were transported to the hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Infiniti, a 22-year-old San Francisco woman, was hospitalized before being arrested on suspicion of DUI.

A 36-year-old man who was driving the Nissan was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The crash shut down all westbound lanes until around 4 a.m.

More details about the accident were not provided.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

Traffic Collision Fatalities Reached a 16-Year High in 2021, Early Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities reached a 16-year high last year.

According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020. NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

The report indicates that the traffic fatalities in the following categories showed relatively large increases in 2021, as compared to 2020;

      • Fatalities in multi-vehicle collisions went up 16%
      • Fatalities among drivers 65 and older rose by 14%
      • fatalities up 13%
      • Fatalities in crashes involving at least one large truck up 13%
      • Daytime fatalities up 11% Fatalities on urban roads up 16%
      • Motorcyclist deaths up 9% Bicyclist deaths up 5%
      • Fatalities in speeding-related mishaps up 5%
      • Fatalities in police-reported, alcohol-involvement collisions up 5%
