Firebaugh, California (June 29, 2022) – The California Highway Patrol has identified 53-year-old Jenny Ko of as the woman killed in a rear-end crash Saturday afternoon in Firebaugh.

The deadly accident happened at around 2:17 p.m. Saturday, June 25th, on the Freeway at Nees Avenue.

As per the CHP officials, a gray Kia Optima, a red Ford Bronco, a 2016 Nissan Murano, and a white Honda Accord crashed for reasons still under investigation.

Responding fire officials and medical personnel declared Jenny Ko, a Nissan passenger, dead at the scene. A second party sustained minor injuries due to the collision.

Officials closed all the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 Freeway due to the accident.

No other information concerning this incident was released.

An investigation is underway.

Firebaugh, California (June 25, 2022) – A woman died following a multi-vehicle collision involving a big rig on Interstate 5 near Firebaugh in County Saturday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The wreck was reported at around 2:17 p.m. just south of the Nees Avenue off-ramp.

CHP said a 2016 Freightliner heading north on I-5 reportedly failed to slow down and rear-ended four vehicles that were slowing down due to an earlier vehicle fire on the side of the highway.

The big rig rolled over following the impact of the collision.

A woman sitting in the right rear passenger seat of a 2016 Nissan Murano that was first hit by the big rig died in the crash. Her identity was not immediately released pending notification of the next of kin.

Other parties sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The CHP is investigating the incident.

Crash Fatalities in California Went Up in 2021, Early Federal Estimates Show

Newly released estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that fatalities caused by traffic crashes on U.S. freeways reached a 16-year high in 2021. The crash deaths also increased in almost every state, including California, according to NHTSA.

According to the Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 report released by NHTSA, about 42,915 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2021 in the U.S. This shows a 10.5% increase from the 38,828 fatalities reported in 2020.

NHTSA says the projection is the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005 as well as the largest percentage rise in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

In California, 4,258 people died in traffic collisions in 2021 – a 10.7 % increase from 2020's 3,847, as per the NHTSA report titled – “Crash Stats: Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021.”

According to the traffic deaths estimates, in the two-state region that includes Arizona and California, crash fatalities in 2021 are projected to go up by 10% over the previous year.
