Authorities said Gutierrez was driving wrong-way on the freeway. He was heading northbound in the southbound lanes when he crashed head-on into another sedan at milepost 299 near State Route 179.
Rimrock, AZ – Johnny Gutierrez, 34, has been identified as the driver killed in a wrong-way collision early Wednesday morning in Rimrock, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The accident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on June 26, on Interstate 17 near milepost 293.
Authorities said Gutierrez was driving wrong-way on the freeway. He was heading northbound in the southbound lanes when he crashed head-on into another sedan at milepost 299 near State Route 179.
Gutierrez, and the sole occupant of his car, was declared dead at the crash site. Four people in the sedan sustained severe injuries and were taken to the hospital.
Authorities believed impairment could be a possible factor in the collision.
An investigation is ongoing.
