Madera, CA: 1 Killed, 2 Seriously Injured in Crash at Road 27 and Avenue 17

, California (February 10, 2022) – One person died, and two others, including a 12-year-old, were seriously injured in a multi-vehicle collision that happened Wednesday evening in Madera, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at about 6 p.m. at Road 27 and Avenue 17.

The wreck involved a Nissan Rogue, a Chrysler, and a pulling a trailer.

The woman driving the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. A 12-year-old girl in the back seat of the Nissan was hospitalized at Valley Children's Hospital with major injuries. Officers said the girl was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. Another passenger in the Nissan was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the Chrysler was heading north on Road 27 when they quickly decided to turn left onto westbound Avenue 17. The car went directly in front of the Nissan, prompting the woman behind the wheel of the Nissan to swerve to the left onto oncoming traffic in an attempt to avoid a crash. The Nissan still struck the back of the Chrysler and then collided head-on into the truck.

It was not clear if the occupants of the truck and the Chrysler were injured.

Officers arrested the driver of the Chrysler on suspicion of DUI.

CHP is investigating the accident.
