Driver Killed, Deputy Injured in Newman Crash at River Road and Villa Manucha Road

, California (January 9, 2022) – A 21-year-old man was killed and two other people, including a Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy, were injured Sunday morning in a car crash at a  Newman intersection, according to authorities.

The deadly collision occurred a little after 7:00 a.m. at the intersection of River Road and Villa Manucha Road.

Authorities said the deputy was responding to a Newman police officer who had requested support when the collision occurred.

The deputy was driving an undercover vehicle, a 2019 Nissan sedan, southbound on River Road towards Villa Manucha Road while a 2015 Chevrolet coupe was stopped at a red light at the “T” intersection. River Road traffic is uncontrolled.

The Chevrolet reportedly entered the intersection directly in front of the Nissan. The Nissan ultimately hit the Chevrolet on the left side. After the impact, both vehicles continued southwest and came to a halt in a nearby field.

The Nissan's lights and siren were on at the time of the collision.

Car Crash in Newman Kills One, Injures Officer

The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A passenger in the Nissan sustained major injuries and was transported to Doctors Medical Center.

The involved deputy was taken to Memorial Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

It is undetermined whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

Further details about the crash were not immediately provided.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
