Montclair, CA: 4 Hospitalized after Explosions at Metal Recycling Facility on Third Street

, California (April 1, 2022) – Four people were hospitalized after a series of explosions that happened Thursday morning at a metal recycling facility in Montclair, as per a local news source.

The industrial property is located in the 4200 block of Third Street.

The incident was reported at about 9:15 a.m., leaving some nearby areas evacuated and nearby schools placed on a precautionary lockdown.

A series of fiery explosions occurred at the factory under unclear circumstances.

Firefighters and other emergency responders set up a perimeter in the area and used firehoses to douse piles of pressurized metal canisters on the ground at the factory's premises.

At least four people were injured in the incident. Two of them were taken to hospitals by ambulance, and two others in civilian vehicles. All victims were hospitalized in unknown conditions.

The explosions released potentially “dangerous” gases, forcing a temporary mandatory evacuation of residents in the nearby areas. The areas affected were State Street between Ramona Avenue and Silicon Avenue, westbound Mission Boulevard between Ramona Avenue and Silicon Avenue, and All of Ramona Avenue and Silicon Avenue between Mission Boulevard and State Street. The evacuation was ordered shortly after 4:20 p.m. and was lifted several hours later.

Shrapnel from the explosions landed on the roofs of homes and on parked vehicles, but it was not clear if they caused any significant property damage.

The relevant authorities are investigating the incident.
