What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?

Pedestrian accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, and it is important to understand the most common causes in order to promote pedestrian safety. Each accident is unique, but here are some of the most common causes:

  • Distracted driving

Distracted driving is a major contributor to pedestrian accidents. Drivers who are distracted by things such as their cell phone, food, or adjusting their steering wheel are more likely to ignore pedestrians and not yield to them.

  • Failure to yield

Pedestrians usually get the right of way at crosswalks and intersections. When drivers don't yield to pedestrians or ignore their rights, accidents can happen. This can happen when drivers are speeding, ignoring traffic signals, or don't check for pedestrians before turning.

  • Impaired driving

Alcohol or drug impairment significantly affects the driver's ability to see pedestrians or keep control of their vehicle. This can lead to serious accidents.

Failing to See Pedestrians at Night

Failing to see pedestrians at night can lead to accidents. Drivers who don't use the right lights, don't adjust to the dark, or don't see pedestrians in the dark can cause accidents

Jaywalking and Improper Crossing

Pedestrians crossing the road outside of a designated crosswalk, darting between cars, or ignoring traffic signals can put themselves in danger. These actions can make it hard for drivers to see what pedestrians are doing and to react quickly enough to avoid a collision.

Vehicular Blind Spots

Larger vehicles, like trucks and buses, often have large blind spots that prevent drivers from seeing pedestrians in front of them. If drivers don't inspect their blind spots and don't pay attention to pedestrians around them, accidents can happen.
