7-Year-Old Girl Killed in San Bernardino County Boat Crash at Colorado River near Buckskin State Park

San Bernardino County, California (May 30, 2022) – A young girl died when she was struck by a boat in the Colorado River on Sunday afternoon, according to a report by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
The crash took place near Buckskin State Park on Sunday, May 29.
A 7-year-old girl was swimming near the shoreline when a boat driven by a 37-year-old Indio man struck her.
The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
The driver of the boat was reportedly driving recklessly and was under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities arrested the driver and booked him into the West Valley Detention Center on a $200,000 bail.
The incident is under investigation by the Colorado River Station.
Impaired Driving
Driving while intoxicated is not just from alcohol. Some over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications may cause impaired driving. As a driver or rider, it is always good to read warning labels and follow directions of use about operating heavy machinery, which includes driving a car, riding a motorcycle, or driving a boat.
If you are going to a bar or restaurant, you should designate a sober driver before heading out to drink. If you are taking medications that may interfere with your ability to drive, plan on staying at home.
Remember to Buckle Up
No matter the type of car you are driving, buckling up remains the safest choice for drivers and passengers.
As you drive around during the Memorial Day holiday, you will come across more law enforcement officers on the freeways as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign launched last week by the NHTSA. The campaign began yesterday, May 23, and will run through to June 5. The campaign aims at reminding drivers and passengers of the importance of wearing a seat belt and the legal consequences of not buckling up.
According to statistics by NHTSA, over 15,000 lives were saved by seat belts in crashes that happened in 2017. In 2020, 10,893 unbuckled people in passenger vehicles died in crashes in the US. 60% of the young adults (ages 18 to 34) killed in the crashes were completely unrestrained.
Remember, seat belt safety starts with you! Your children are watching.
