58-Year-Old South Dakota Man Hospitalized after Highway 395 Collision near Main Street in Hesperia; Several Cattle Killed
Hesperia, California (November 30, 2021) – A driver was injured early Tuesday morning in a traffic crash involving a pair of semi-trucks in Hesperia, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 12:30 a.m. collision happened on Highway 395, just south of Main Street.
The CHP said a 41-year-old Pomona man was driving a 2012 International semi-truck southbound on Highway 395 when he hit an abandoned 2013 Yamaha YZ motorcycle in the southbound lane of traffic.
The International then crossed over into the northbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 2022 Kenworth semi-truck carrying 32 heads of cattle, driven by a 58-year-old South Dakota man.
The Kenworth overturned in the crash and pinned the driver inside. He was extricated and taken to an area hospital with moderate injuries.
The driver of the 2012 International was evaluated and released at the scene.
Seven of the cattle were killed while seven others were severely injured and were euthanized at the scene. Eight of the cattle survived the collision and were rescued from the trailer with the assistance of several local ranchers. Another ten escaped into the desert and were later rounded up by local ranchers and the Hesperia Animal Control.
Authorities temporarily closed Highway 395 near Main Street following the wreck.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
