San Diego, CA. – An Uber driver and a passenger were injured when their car veered off the roadway and overturned Thursday afternoon near an intersection in Encanto, the San Diego Police Department reported.
The incident occurred just before 4 p.m. on Imperial Avenue near 60th Street.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a 67-year-old man driving an Uber was heading eastbound on Imperial Avenue with a female passenger.
For an unknown reason, the driver veered off the roadway, jumped the curb, and hit a power box and bus bench before the vehicle overturned onto its side next to a pole near the trolley tracks.
The woman was able to get out of the black Kia after the collision. She suffered minor injuries.
The driver was trapped inside the vehicle until San Diego Fire-Rescue Department personnel responded and cut the car apart before pulling him out.
The man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
A witness told authorities that the driver appeared to pass out or fall asleep behind the wheel prior to the crash.
Authorities are investigating the incident.
