The wreck occurred around 10:18 p.m. on westbound State Route 4 near Balfour Road.
Brentwood, CA – Two people died in a fiery car crash in Brentwood Wednesday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The fatal collision happened around 10:18 p.m. on May 21 on westbound State Route 4 near Balfour Road.
Officers responded to a crash involving a gray SUV and a gray sedan. Authorities said one of the cars reportedly crossed over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the second vehicle.
The SUV, an electric car, caught fire after the collision with an occupant trapped inside. The vehicle was emitting toxic fumes.
The Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, the Brentwood Police Department, firefighters, and paramedics responded to the scene.
The person trapped inside the SUV died in the crash. Firefighters took some time before they could extricate the body due to the toxic chemicals coming from the car.
The driver of the sedan was also trapped and died in the incident.
The crash remains under investigation.
