24-Year-Old Santa Ynez Woman Dies Weeks After Collision on Highway 154 in Santa Barbara

, CA. – 24-year-old Carly Grace Howard died days after she was taken off life support following a crash that happened earlier this month in Santa Barbara.

According to her family, Howard died Wednesday after the family decided to remove her from life support when they learned of her prognosis, including “no expectation of regaining consciousness.”

Howard was involved in a head-on collision around 6:53 a.m. on May 1 on Highway 154 near San Antonio Creek Road.

Authorities said just before the crash, 28-year-old Katelyn Rose Fultz, of Santa Barbara, was driving a GMC Sierra eastbound on the highway when she crossed the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and crashed with Howard's Pontiac Vibe sedan.

Howard, a Santa Ynez resident, suffered critical injuries, including traumatic brain injury and many broken bones. She underwent surgery to ease swelling in her brain before being placed under life support.

Fultz was arrested and charged with felony driving under the influence causing injury, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher causing injury, and misdemeanor driving without a license.

Santa Barbara, CA. – 24-year-old Katelyn Fultz of was arrested on suspicion of DUI after three people were injured in a head-on collision last week in Santa Barbara.

According to the California Highway Patrol Santa Barbara Office, Fultz was arrested for DUI and DUI causing great bodily injury after the crash that happened around 6:53 a.m. Thursday on Highway 154 near San Antonio Creek Road.

Investigators said Fultz was driving a GMC Sierra truck eastbound on the highway when she drifted into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Pontiac Vibe sedan.

One person was trapped in the wreckage with critical injuries.

Emergency personnel freed the victim and transported them to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

Another person who sustained major injuries was taken to the same hospital.

Fultz was also hospitalized for her injuries.
