Four vehicles were involved in the accident Thursday afternoon near Balcom Canyon Road.
Moorpark, CA. – The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man who died in a head-on collision that happened Thursday afternoon as 43-year-old Cristobal Sanchez-Perez, of North Hollywood, Los Angeles.
The accident happened around 3:15 p.m. on Highway 118 west of Balcom Canyon Road between Somis and Moorpark.
Four vehicles were involved in the accident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, three of the cars, a black Ford Raptor pickup truck, a black Honda Civic, and a white Ford Transit-250 van, were traveling eastbound on the highway.
Traffic ahead of the Raptor started to slow down prompting both the drivers of the Raptor and the Civic to slow down.
The driver of the Transit van, however, did not slow down on time. The driver attempted to veer to the left to avoid a crash but ended up hitting the left rear of the Civic. The van then went to the opposing lane and collided head-on with an oncoming white Toyota Highlander driven by Sanchez-Perez.
The Civic also rear-ended the Raptor after it was hit by the van during the initial impact.
Three people got trapped inside the Highlander, and one person was trapped inside one of the other vehicles.
Ventura County firefighters responded to the scene and pronounced Sanchez-Perez dead at the scene. The firefighters cut through the vehicle to remove his body. His family has since opened a GoFundMe account to help raise funds for his funeral.
Two passengers in Sanchez-Perez's car were extricated and transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.
It was not clear what injuries the fourth person who was trapped sustained.
Impairment was not believed to be a contributing factor and no one was arrested.
CHP Moorpark Area Office is investigating the accident.

Moorpark, CA. – One person was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 118 in Moorpark Thursday afternoon.
According to the CHP, the wreck happened at about 3:16 p.m. on State Route 118 at Balcom Canyon Road.
Two vehicles were involved in the accident, but how they collided was not immediately established.
One person, whose identity was not disclosed, died at the crash site.
More details about the wreck were not provided.
An investigation is ongoing.
